Shona Joins the Team as Group Lead Volunteer at Leyland St. James
We’re excited to welcome Shona Thompson as the new Group Lead Volunteer at Leyland St. James Scouts!
Shona has been part of the Scout movement since 2019 and brings with her a real passion for helping others and building a welcoming, inclusive environment for young people and volunteers alike. In her new role, she’ll be supporting the fantastic team that is already delivering brilliant opportunities to young people across Beavers (6-8), Cubs (8-10.5), Scouts (10.5-14) and will soon be welcoming Squirrels (4-6), our newest and most exciting section for 4 to 6-year-olds. It’s a brilliant first step into Scouts—helping young children gain confidence, make friends and learn through play. Find out more about the big benefits of Squirrels
By day, Shona works as a ramp agent for Jet2holidays at Manchester Airport, a fast-paced role that calls for strong teamwork and resilience. She also recently qualified as a trainee nursing associate, having previously worked as a student nurse within the NHS. Her career journey has taken her across Lancashire, from Blackpool to Leyland—and now into a new chapter helping Scouts grow and thrive.
Shona said: “I’m really excited to be stepping into this role and working alongside such an amazing team of volunteers. It’s a fantastic opportunity to help even more young people gain valuable skills for life. There’s so much to look forward to, and I can’t wait to get stuck in and support the group as we grow and thrive together.”
Shona’s commitment to inclusion and diversity was recently recognised with a National Diversity & Inclusion Award nomination. Shona’s drive to make a difference shines through, whether inspiring young people or championing equality Read more about Shona’s nomination.
June, District Lead Volunteer, said: “Shona brings warmth, energy, and lived experience to the role. She understands the value of making everyone feel welcome and supported. We’re delighted to have her leading the way at Leyland St. James.”
With more young people than ever joining Scouts across South Ribble and new volunteers stepping forward each month, it’s an exciting time for the movement. If you’re inspired by Shona’s story and want to play your part, there’s a place for everyone—whether behind the scenes or out front leading adventures.
