5 Myths About Volunteering with South Ribble Scouts – Busted!

Date: 17th May 2025 Author: Jon Nutten

Reassuring real people with real lives (like you) that there’s a place for everyone in Scouting.

Here in South Ribble, our amazing volunteers help create everyday adventures that shape young people’s lives — and theirs, too.

But we get it. The idea of “volunteering” can sound a bit… overwhelming. Maybe you think you need loads of free time, a rucksack full of camping gear, or years of experience working with kids. We’re here to tell you that none of that is true.

Let’s bust five of the biggest myths about volunteering with Scouts

❌ Myth 1: “I don’t have enough time.”

✅ Truth: You decide how much time you give.

Whether you can offer an hour a month or a couple of hours a week, we’ll find a role that fits your life. From admin whizzes to occasional event helpers, every role matters. With team-based Volunteering, no one’s left holding the tent poles alone—we share the load and support each other.

❌ Myth 2: “I don’t have the right skills.”

✅ Truth: You don’t need to know how to light a fire or tie a knot.

We’ll show you the ropes (literally if you want!). Volunteering with Scouts is about supporting young people in developing skills for life. Whether you’re great at organising, creative with crafts, or a dab hand at first aid — there’s a place for you in our team. We learn together.

❌ Myth 3: “It’s all camping and outdoor stuff.”

✅ Truth: That’s only one part of it.

Sure, we love a good hike — but we also love tech nights, games, community projects, or just sharing stories over hot chocolate. Not all roles are front and centre, either. From social media to maintenance, treasurer to trustee — not every volunteer wears a necker (but you’re welcome to!).

❌ Myth 4: “It’s a big commitment.”

✅ Truth: You’re never on your own — and we’ll support you all the way.

With our new, flexible volunteering model, you’re part of a team from day one. You can step in when it suits you, share tasks, and build skills as you go. We’re here to help you grow in confidence like our young people do.

❌ Myth 5: “It’s not for people like me.”

✅ Truth: Scouting is for everyone.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life — parents, students, retired people, people with full-time jobs, and everything in between. You don’t have to be sporty, loud or outdoorsy. If you care about supporting young people and having fun while you do it, you’re exactly who we need.
