Make a Difference Behind the Scenes: Become a Trustee with South Ribble Scouts

Date: 12th Apr 2025 Author: Jon Nutten

Scouting in South Ribble is about more than tents, badges, and campfires. It’s powered by everyday people who volunteer their time to support young people and each other — and that includes the amazing team behind the scenes: our Trustees.

If you’re passionate about making a difference but unsure where to start, becoming a Trustee is the thing for you. It’s a flexible, rewarding role where you can use your skills to help young people gain skills for life.

What does a Trustee do?

Trustees sit on our Trustee Board, which oversees the management of our groups and ensures everything runs safely, legally, and sustainably.

As a Trustee, you’ll help:

  • Support our amazing volunteers and leaders
  • Make sure our Scout Groups are financially sound run
  • Champion our strategy and values
  • Ensure our buildings and resources are well looked after

You don’t need to be a current Scout or have any formal qualifications — just a passion for helping young people thrive, and a willingness to get involved.

Read our Five Top Tips for Welcoming New Trustees to learn how we support new volunteers in this important role.

Why become a Trustee?

Being a Trustee with South Ribble Scouts isn’t just about policies and paperwork — it’s about helping to shape the future of local Scouting, while developing your own skills and confidence along the way.

We’re looking for people from all walks of life to join our Trustee Board — especially those who are passionate about their local community. Whether you’re a headteacher or deputy head, a local councillor, a small business owner, or someone who simply wants to make a difference, you’ll bring valuable experience and insight to our team.

You don’t need any prior experience with Scouts. If you care about giving young people the best start in life and want to support a charity that truly makes an impact, we’d love to hear from you.

As we explored in Why Volunteering with Scouts is More Than Just Giving Back, the impact you make goes far beyond the meeting room.

Here’s just a few things you’ll get in return:

  • New skills in areas like leadership, governance, finance, and safeguarding

  • Opportunities to work with passionate, like-minded people

  • Experience that looks great on your CV or supports your personal development

  • A real sense of purpose from helping young people gain skills for life

  • Flexibility – our Trustee roles can flex around your life, work, and interests

And the benefits don’t stop there. As we shared in Why Volunteering with Scouts is Good for You – and Great for South Ribble, volunteering with us can give your wellbeing a boost too — offering connection, confidence, and community.
