Why Volunteering with South Ribble Scouts is More Than Just Giving Back

Date: 5th Apr 2025 Author: Jon Nutten

Volunteering: It’s Good for Young People – and Good for You Too

Volunteering isn’t just about helping others—it’s good for you, too. Across the UK, millions of people give their time to support charities and youth organisations like Scouts, but did you know that volunteering can boost your mental health, career prospects, and overall well-being?

A report from the UK Government Community Life Survey 2021/22 highlights that volunteers are more likely to feel they have control over their lives and can make a difference in their community. Additionally, The Scouts Association reports that 70% of volunteers feel more satisfied with life, 66% experience higher self-esteem, and 42% say it helps reduce loneliness.

That’s why Scouts UK’s #GoodForYou campaign champions volunteering not just as a way to support young people—but as a chance to grow yourself.

How Volunteering with South Ribble Scouts Makes a Difference

In South Ribble, over 370 volunteers support 1,700 young people in gaining essential life skills. Whether leading an adventure, organising activities, or helping behind the scenes, every role makes a difference.

Flexible Volunteering—Making it Work for You

At South Ribble Scouts, we know that not everyone can commit to a regular weekly role. That’s why we offer flexible volunteering opportunities to fit around busy schedules. Whether you can spare an hour a month, support specific events, or help with admin behind the scenes, every contribution counts.

Task-Based Volunteering: If a weekly commitment isn’t for you, why not take on a one-off task? Whether it’s helping with social media, running a fundraising event, or assisting with outdoor activities, there’s a role to suit your skills and availability.

Shared Volunteering: Bring a friend, colleague, or family member and volunteer as a team. Supporting Scouts can be even more enjoyable when shared with others.

Skill-Based Volunteering: If you have professional skills in finance, marketing, IT, or logistics, we’d love to use them! Your expertise can help us grow and improve the support we offer young people.

Jon Nutten, Support Team Lead at South Ribble Scouts, says: “Volunteering with Scouts is more than giving back—it’s about being part of a community, developing your own skills, and having fun along the way.”

A Strong Volunteer Culture at South Ribble Scouts

We’re passionate about creating a supportive and rewarding volunteer culture, ensuring everyone feels valued and appreciated. Volunteering should be enjoyable and meaningful and work around your life—not the other way around!
