Skills for Life: How Scouts Sets Young People Up for Success
At Scouts, we don’t just teach knots or how to pitch a tent — although we do that too! We’re in the business of building skills for life.
Here in South Ribble, our Scouts gain real-world experience that helps them succeed at school, thrive at home, and prepare for future careers while having a brilliant time with friends and leaders who care.
What Skills for Life Really Means
Our programme develops the practical, emotional, and creative skills that prepare young people for lifelong success. That includes:
- Communication – Talking, listening, presenting and sharing ideas
- Teamwork – Collaborating, resolving conflict, and supporting others
- Problem-solving – Thinking on their feet, learning from mistakes
- Resilience – Bouncing back when things go wrong
- Citizenship – Taking action, leading change and understanding others
- Digital skills – Staying safe online, exploring coding and creative tech
- Sustainability – Protecting our planet and learning about climate action
- Leadership – Taking initiative, decision-making and motivating teams
- Public speaking and debating – Building confidence to speak up
- Money management – Learning to budget, save, and plan ahead
- First aid and wellbeing – Learning to care for themselves and others
From cooking to coding, hiking to helping in the community — these experiences shape well-rounded, adaptable, and confident young people.

Research-Backed Results
We’re proud that what we do works. According to research by Scouts UK and the University of Edinburgh:
🧾 “Former Scouts are 17% more likely to show leadership and planning skills, and 11% more likely to work well in teams.”
And it’s not just statistics. A new study by Demos found that non-formal education, like Scouts, significantly boosts youth employability — especially when it comes to teamwork, time management and resilience.
Real People. Real Stories.
Dwayne Fields — From Scout to Chief Scout
Dwayne Fields, the first Black Briton to walk to the North Pole, is now the UK Chief Scout and a powerful advocate for the impact of Scouts on young lives. Growing up in London, he faced violence, crime, and homelessness. Scouts gave him direction, resilience, and a sense of belonging.
“Scouts gave me the skills and confidence to change my life and go on to inspire others.” — Read his story in The Times
Now, as Chief Scout, Dwayne continues to inspire a new generation of young people to dream big, stay curious, and make a difference.
Scouts as Global Citizens
In South Ribble and across the UK, young people in Scouts are making a difference through social action, sustainability, and youth leadership. Check out our blog, Volunteering Starts Young, to see how local young people are becoming active global citizens, taking on projects that support the UN Sustainable Development Goals — from environmental protection to promoting equality and wellbeing.
Our young people don’t just build campfires — they build futures.
Real Recognition for Real Impact
Scouting doesn’t go unnoticed. In 2024, South Ribble Scout volunteer Alan Stansfield received a British Empire Medalfor decades of incredible service to young people. His journey — from Cub Scout to mentor of hundreds — is proof of the lifelong impact Scouts can have.
Youth Engagement Matters
New research by Scouts UK demonstrates that involving young people in decision-making processes enhances their confidence and motivation. The Youth Engagement Impact Report highlights how being heard—whether through youth forums or by leading local projects—helps young people grow into confident, capable adults.
The Fun Comes First
Yes, we’re serious about skills—but we’re also serious about fun. Scouts is where lifelong friendships are made, marshmallows are toasted, and young people are inspired to dream big. Whether kayaking for the first time or earning their first badge, every step is filled with encouragement, excitement, and growth.
