Jon – ADC Communications, looks back on 2020 and the excitement for 2021

Date: 22nd Dec 2020 Author: Jon Nutten

It has been an interesting year…  With the last few days of 2020 are now upon us (thank goodness, we might say) I for one is looking forward to slowing down and relax over the festive period and enjoy some socially distanced outdoor catch up with friends after what has been a challenging time for us all one way or another!

I cannot believe it has been 6 months since I re-joined South Ribble. I have astonished by our leadership team and how all our flexible volunteers and more importantly young people have adapted, continued to deliver skills for life and we learned we all have more resilience than we knew; It reminds me that Scouts is more vital than ever as it offers hope, encouragement, and skills for life to our young people.

If we look back at the last 6 months alone we have delivered:

  • Christmas Carol’s – with a difference
  • A fantastic Autumn @ Home digital programme
  • A Summer of digital fun
  • Countless Zoom sessions
  • Some of our young people enjoyed F2F Scouting again
  • Leaders have continued to complete their training (online)
  • We learned about Black History Month, with some fantastic digital sessions via Scouts HQ
  • Jambutee (World Famous camp at home! – that had all of Team UK talking…)

I am really looking forward to 2021! Though at the start of the year, we will continue in some way or another online, social distanced, and restrictions in place. We have a lot to look forward to as I echo June’s comments in her festive message. “Scouting will be back in the New Year and we will begin a new journey to build up our groups, units, and the district once again to be better than ever.” But for me, when it is safe to do so, is getting out around the district to meet you all!

I hope you all have a great festive break, whatever you do, and continue to support each other, keep an open mind and remember why Scouts is important… We offer skills for life, create better communities, and hope! If you need any help, assistance with your communications, or just a general chat. Feel free to reach out at any time!

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
