9th Penwortham Scouts celebrate year’s end and honour Steve Blackburn
9th Penwortham Scout Group marked the end of a busy and successful Scouting year this evening with a special celebration – and a deeply meaningful moment as the group officially unveiled the new name of their Scout hut in honour of the late Steve Blackburn.
The unveiling was carried out by Steve’s widow, Norma, his son, Simon, and a close family friend, Margaret, surrounded by young people, volunteers, families, and members of the local community.
Steve was a guiding light behind 9th Penwortham Scouts for decades. He served as Group Scout Leader (now known as Group Lead Volunteer) for more than 27 years. He was instrumental in the construction of the Scout hut, which has been at the heart of local Scouting since its grand opening in 1987. His dedication ensured generations of young people had a safe, welcoming place to learn, grow and belong.
Speaking at the event, Norma Blackburn said: “This is a monumental day. Steve spent so many years enabling Scouting here, giving countless hours to the group. I remember many late nights – even tilling until 2 am – to make sure everything was ready. He was so passionate about making sure young people had the best opportunities possible.”
Simon Blackburn, Steve’s son, added, “I’m so proud. My mum and my late dad would be immensely proud of what this group has become today. I’m incredibly grateful to all the current volunteers who carry on that legacy and give so much of their time.”
Anne, Group Lead Volunteer at 9th Penwortham Scouts, said: “This is a really special moment for our group. It recognises the commitment, determination and care Steve gave to lay the foundations of what 9th Penwortham is today. Naming the hut in his honour is a lasting way to celebrate that legacy and the impact it continues to have on our young people.”
Today, over 70 young people take part in Scouting at 9th Penwortham each week, gaining skills for life through adventure, teamwork and fun. This is supported by a dedicated team of more than 10 volunteers, who give their time flexibly to help young people thrive.
Many of the current volunteers have long-standing links to the group, including adults who were once young people at 9th Penwortham themselves, supported and inspired by Steve during his years as Group Scout Leader. It reflects the strong sense of family and community that continues to define the group.
9th Penwortham Scouts welcomes new young people across all sections:
