Scouts UK Announces New “Campfire Karaoke Badge” to Ignite Musical Spirit

Date: 1st Apr 2025 Author: Jon Nutten

In a fun and fiery twist, Scouts UK has introduced its latest challenge for young adventurers: the “Campfire Karaoke Badge.” Blending the timeless Scouting skill of fire-lighting with the excitement of live performance, this new badge is set to spark plenty of fun for music-loving Scouts across the country.

Singing and Sparking

The badge, which was officially announced on April 1st, challenges Scouts to light a campfire while simultaneously performing a song of their choice.

To earn the badge, participants must demonstrate their fire-lighting skills, stage presence, musical talent, and ability to belt out a tune without setting their songbook—or themselves—on fire.

Lee McNulty, Programme Team Lead for South Ribble Scouts, said, “This badge brings a brilliant mix of tradition and creativity to Scouting. Singing around the campfire has always been a favourite part of what we do, but this takes it to the next level. What better way to build confidence, resilience, and multitasking skills than combining live performance with safe fire-lighting?”

Rigorous Requirements

To qualify for the Campfire Karaoke Badge, Scouts must:

  • Select a song that is at least two minutes long.
  • Successfully light a campfire without assistance.
  • Maintain the fire while continuing to perform.
  • Demonstrate both vocal enthusiasm and safe fire management.

Bonus points are awarded for harmonizing with fellow Scouts or incorporating musical instruments—provided they remain flame-free.

Mixed Reactions from Scout Leaders

While some leaders embrace the challenge, others are less convinced. Mark, a Scout Leader from 2nd Leyland, commented, “We’ve always encouraged creativity, but I’m not sure how I feel about mixing pop ballads with fire-starting. Still, I suppose it could make for some interesting camp nights.”

Meanwhile, Scouts are already practising their renditions of classics like “Campfire’s Burning” and pop hits like “Firework” by Katy Perry. Early reports suggest that many are opting for ukuleles as their instrument of choice, given their portability and low risk of combustion.

How to Get Involved

Scouts and leaders can find more details about the Campfire Karaoke Badge on the Scouts UK website. Applications are expected to open later this month, with virtual auditions planned to accommodate remote troops.

So warm up those vocal cords, dust off your fire-lighting kits, and get ready to serenade the flames!

Happy April Fools’ Day from South Ribble Scouts!
