Lead the Change: Volunteer Development Team Leader Role

Date: 23rd Aug 2025 Author: Jon Nutten

Behind every brilliant Scout adventure is a brilliant team of volunteers — and behind every brilliant volunteer is someone who welcomed, supported, and empowered them to succeed.

At South Ribble Scouts, we’re looking for a new Volunteer Development Team Leader to help us create the best possible experience for our adult volunteers.

If you’re passionate about people, developing potential, and making Scouting more inclusive and accessible — this could be the role for you.

Why This Role Matters

Scouting only works when volunteers feel valued, supported and inspired. The Volunteer Development Team is key to:

  • Welcoming and onboarding new volunteers
  • Supporting volunteers through change and helping teams grow
  • Promoting learning and development that builds confidence and skills
  • Encouraging inclusion and belonging across all teams and roles
  • Recognising the amazing things our volunteers achieve

The Team Leader helps coordinate this: guiding the team’s priorities, collaborating with local leaders, and ensuring every volunteer has the support they need to thrive.

Volunteer Development + Inclusion: Why They Belong Together

We’re building a movement that’s inclusive, accessible and representative of the communities we serve.

Working closely with our District Inclusion Champion, the Volunteer Development Team Leader helps ensure:

  • Barriers to volunteering are reduced
  • New volunteers feel welcome, included, and heard
  • Inclusive recruitment and development is at the heart of how we grow
  • Underrepresented communities feel Scouting is a place where they belong

“Inclusion isn’t a bolt-on — it’s how we support people well. Every adult deserves to feel like they have a place and a voice in Scouting.”

Tools, Support and Flexibility

As Team Leader, you’ll be supported by our District team and Scouts UK resources, including:

  • Volunteer Development Team framework
  • Welcome conversations, onboarding tools and inclusion checklists
  • A peer network of other Team Leaders across the UK
  • Flexible volunteering options that fit around your life

You don’t need to be a Scouting expert — just someone who believes in people and wants to help others grow.

What You’ll Get in Return

  • Experience leading a team with purpose and vision
  • A chance to shape the culture of volunteering across South Ribble
  • Opportunities for personal development, coaching and networking
  • The satisfaction of knowing you’re building the future of Scouting

“The most rewarding part is seeing someone grow in confidence because you believed in them.”

Join Us as a Volunteer Development Team Leader

This is a flexible volunteer role designed to fit around your lifestyle. On average, you can expect to contribute around 4–6 hours per month, including:

  • South Ribble District (role can be hybrid)
  • Flexible hours around your availability
  • Full support and induction provided
  • Supporting recruitment or welcome activities
  • Collaborating with other local volunteers

Much of the role can be done remotely and at times that suit you — perfect for someone with other commitments looking to make a big difference.

This is your chance to lead a vital team that shapes every volunteer’s experience and, in turn, supports even more young people in gaining Skills for Life. Ready to apply or find out more? Contact us for a no-pressure chat—we’d love to hear from you.

Closing date: 19th September
