Stanhope Explorer Scout Unit enjoys a fantastic year of growth in 2020!
In unprecedented times, it is fantastic to see young people enjoying the valuable skills for life that Scouts brings. This year has been a strange one, we have been through multiple lockdowns, Scouting was suspended as we know it, we adapted, showed great resilience, and proved that Scouts is more relevant and needed for our young people and local communities than ever before!
Earlier this year, the district welcomes a new Explorer Scout unit open called Stanhope. They started off strong from the offset, visiting local groups they successfully saw 20 young people sign up! As the year went on, they have continued to deliver a fantastic programme both online and with some limited Face-2-Face Scouting each week following the advice/guidance from NYA, Scouts HQ, and the County Team.
We asked the young people their top 5 experiences in the new Explorer Unit and this is what they shared with us.
Top 5 Activities:
- The Halloween Heist – a six-hour socially distanced wide game we organised in the local area.
- Building cardboard ovens to cook pizza in.
- The eight-week-long Taskmaster competition over Zoom during the first lockdown.
- Designing and building our own crazy golf courses from recycled materials.
- Winning the Bibby’s Farm Incident Challenge (pre lockdown).
Stanhope has enjoyed great success this year, enabled 13 young people to earn their DofE Bronze Award. They took on a range of projects, supporting vulnerable and elderly members of the local community who are shielding or needed extra support. They all gain vital skills for life through the skills section and undertaking socially distanced expeditions in the local area.
