Staff from Wickes support 9th Penwortham (St.Leonards) Scout Group

Date: 7th Oct 2023 Author: Jon Nutten

Over the weekend, teams of volunteers, Parents and staff from Wickes Preston came together at 9th Penwortham (St.Leonards) Scout Group as part of a successful application to the Wickes Community Programme, a dedicated product fund to support local initiatives in helping them maintain and renovate community areas.

The scheme sees staff members volunteer their time to support community projects and local charities to build stronger links in their local communities, offering time, expertise and materials to support their objectives.

Thanks to the dry weather, six staff from Wickes, Preston, alongside an army of volunteers from the group past and present, were able to repaint the outside cladding and refresh the interior.

Anne Freeman (Lead Volunteer, 9th Penwortham) said, “A huge thanks to the team at Wickes for their support and materials, enabling us to focus on supporting young people to learn valuable life skills that Scouts offers each week. This much-needed maintenance and support is excellent! We couldn’t have done this without them.

I’d also like to thank the team of volunteers, parents and young people who all got stuck in, some with more paint on themselves than the walls, but it’s all fun.”

Today’s news and event is a big positive step for the 9th Penwortham (St.Leonards) Scout Group to continue its growth path, thanks to a fantastic team of volunteers from all backgrounds and not worry about some of the building maintenance thanks to today’s efforts.

Terry (Store Manager, Preston) said, “It’s been great to give back to our local community via our Community Programme. I’m proud of the team that has come together to support a great cause and give up their time and Wickes for donating materials. It’s our first-ever project, and it’s been great. What these volunteers for young people in the area is brilliant.”

Wickes Community Programme, is open to all local community groups and charities seeking help for improvement projects, you can enquire via your local store. You can also find out more via their dedicated page: The Wickes Community Programme

Haydn (Wickes, staff member) said, “I’ve loved today. I volunteer in Preston for Mungo Park Explorers (14-18). I’ve learned so many skills during my time in Scouts, and it’s excellent that through work, I’ve been able to support others.”

Here in South Ribble, we create stronger communities and inspire positive futures with teeth-gritting, keep-on-go-ing, summit-reaching, bely-laughing nights every night of the week.

Are you inspired? Why not see what opportunities are on offer. You don’t need to be Bear Grylls to volunteer.
