Take a look at some of our favourite ways to get your pancake fix without using a stove – perfect for Scout huts and could earn you some badges!
Pancake Day is finally here! We’ll all be struggling to decide between the classic lemon and sugar or chocolatey Nutella to enjoy on our Pancakes. However, it’s not often you come across a fully functioning stove in a Scout hut, so we’ve come up with a few different ways that you can cook a pancake without the hob – some of which cover some badge work too!

Tin can and a candle
This method of cooking is educational and delicious. As well as teaching your Scouts how heat rising cooks the food, and fire safety, you can also enjoy the end product!
Things you’ll need:
- 500g tin (washed and dried out) with holes drilled around the top
- Tin snips
- Pancake batter
- Make sure your empty, clean can has holes drilled in around the top, closed edge of the can (you can also do this using a corkscrew or other sharp object) and using tin snips, cut an opening into the side to allow the air to get to the candle.
- Place the candle on a heatproof surface, light, and place the can on top.
- Once the surface has warmed, place some butter on the top and when bubbling, spoon the mixture on to the surface.
- Once the underneath surface has cooked for a while or starts to brown, flip the pancake using the toothpicks to cook on the other side.
- Top with your favourite toppings.
Pan on an open fire
Using a traditional pancake recipe, you can use a campfire to cook your pancake.
Once a freshly lit fire has burnt down to its embers, you can then cook your pancake above the fire as you would at home on the stove.
But don’t use your nice pans, a cast-iron one is probably best for this sort of outdoors cooking!
If you’re a lucky Group with a microwave, you can use this to your advantage.
With possibly the easiest way to make pancakes, ever… this is a definite winner when you have lots of mouths to feed on pancake day!
Ingredients (per person):
- 1 medium egg
- A splash of milk
- 3 spoons of plain flour
- A spoonful of butter
- Microwave-safe plate (preferably one with rounded edges)
- Crack your egg into the mug, add the flour, milk and whisk with a fork until fully combined with no lumps.
- Cover your plate in butter to make sure the pancake doesn’t stick and pour the mixture onto the plate.
- On medium-high, cook the pancake for at least 30 seconds or until done in the middle, but make sure you watch it so that it doesn’t overcook.
- Enjoy with your favourite toppings!
Buy them from the supermarket
Obviously, the easiest way to get your pancake fix on pancake day is to buy ready-made crepes or scotch pancakes from the supermarket – great for the younger ones!
You can either eat these cold or toast to heat and still have your favourite toppings.
